How and why does a writer turn into a ghost? Different writers can have different journeys to their becoming the voice of another. My journey had a very creative and comforting beginning

01
The Call

My career as a children’s writer was well established by early 2005 when I received a call from a friend who worked as an editor at a leading publisher. “Would you be interested in writing a children’s book?” she asked. “Of course,” I replied, a little surprised at her query. Writing for children was what I did most visibly in those days, with my stories and articles appearing regularly in the Young World section of The Hindu, Chennai’s iconic newspaper. My books for children had already won awards and been published. So, what exactly did my friend have in mind? “This is different,” she said. “You will be writing for a famous person, who will be the author. You will be her ghostwriter. Is that ok by you?” “Who is the famous person?” I countered with a question. “Shakuntala Devi, the mathematical genius,” was the reply. “She has already written many books of her own, about mathematics. This time she wants a storyteller who will be able to best narrate her story about a girl who is scared of maths and gets over her fears. It’s entirely her own story, but she has a busy schedule and needs a good writer.” “Of course!” I said, for the second time. I was thrilled. Who, in my generation of schoolgoers, had not heard of Shakuntala Devi, whose mathematical prowess had put early computers to shame?

The Connection

Thus began a very dear friendship with the genius who showered me with affection for several years. Shakuntala Devi lived in Bangalore and I lived then in Chennai. Video calling and online meetings were not yet a feature of our lives. We relied on our personal meetings, sometimes in Chennai, sometimes in Bangalore, for her to instruct me in how she wanted the book to be written. “I want to tell a story that takes away from children the fear of numbers. Too often, children develop an unnecessary fear of Maths in the early school years. I want them to enjoy a story that reveals the quality of numbers and makes them less scared of Maths in the classroom,” she told me. Sure enough, she wove a story of little Neha and her discovery of the numbers 1 to 9, till she meets the great Zero. When she told me how she had visualized the tale, she also added details of how she would like the cultural milieu around Neha to be drawn. I took notes of each mention that she made, and incorporated it into In the Wonderland of Numbers: Maths and Your Child. I moved away from Chennai to distant Faizabad after the book came out. But the special relationship I shared with Shakuntala Devi remained as one of my fondest memories till the time of her passing in 2013. I had continued writing my own books and several of them had been published by then. Since they were coming out at regular intervals, I did not seek to become a “ghost” once again. This is how it continued, till the coronavirus of 2020 turned the world upside down.

The Process

By now, it was possible to connect with people who were at opposite ends of the world, and exchange ideas, feelings, information, everything that would take shape as a book. With everyone confined to their homes by the pandemic, people who had planned to write a book but never got around to doing it, began reaching out to me. I responded, and began working as a ghostwriter/writing partner by the second half of 2020. Since then, I have worked with people from diverse walks of life that include a doctor, a lawyer, an angel investor, an emerging political leader, a social entrepreneur and a distinguished officer from the armed forces. Some of the books are in the public domain, while others have not yet been published due to their authors’ change of intent or circumstances.

The reason that these books are not featured here is because confidentiality is the first requirement of any ghostwriting contract, and I am bound to keep the arrangement a secret. I can also not share any content from the books without the consent of the author.

I have met some of the authors with whom I have worked, and have never met some others. Communication through calls, voice notes, and online meetings has been enough to continue the work and bring it to its conclusion.

If you are interested in taking our writing partnership forward, please book a call, or write to me. I can then show you a few samples.
